The finals and awarding ceremony of the Inter Regiment Tennis Championship – 2018, organized by the Sri Lanka Army Tennis Committee, got underway on Tuesday (22) evening at Security Force Headquarters (East) Tennis court in Welikanda.
Lieutenant General Mahesh Senanayake, Commander of the Army graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and gave away certificates and medals to the winners. During the awarding ceremony, Commander of the Army gave away special awards to the Wheelchair Tennis players, Sergeant Ranaweera R A L S of GR and Bombardier Dharmasena D S R of SLA as tokens of appreciation of their contribution to Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Army Sports by winning recent Asian Wheelchair Tennis Championship.
Under the leadership of the Chairman, Army Tennis Association and Commander Security Force (East) Major General Aruna Jayasekara, the tournament was organized producing a significant platform for the Amy tennis players to showcase their talents.
Thirteen regiments competed under eight categories Over 50 Men’s Singles, Over 50 Men’s Open Doubles, Over 45 Men’s Singles, Over 45 Men’s Doubles, Over 35 Men’s Singles, Over 35 Men’s Double, Men’s Open Singles and Men’s Open Doubles were competed by more than 160 players of those regiments.
Finally, in the Inter Regiment Team matches, Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment (VIR) carried away the Championship and Sri Lanka Electrical & Mechanical Engineers (SLEME) and Sri Lanka Signal Corps (SLSC) emerged as 1st and 2nd runners-up respectively.
