LOCATION OF THE ARMY FARM KANDAKADU

The Army farm Kandakadu is situated 277 km away from Colombo at Welikanda Divisional Secretary Division of Polonnaruwa district in the North Central province closer to historical Buddhist temple known as Somawathiya

HISTORY OF THE FARM

  • Started in1950,under the guidance of Hon Prime minister Mr. DS Senanayake with the assistance of Mr. Anchor from England
  • Total acrage was 11,436 and it was managed by Dept of Agriculture
  • Peak production period was late 1960’s and the capacity was 14,000 animals
  • In 1984 First terrorist attack was occurred & 04 x Farm workers were killed
  • Subsequently LTTE attacks were increased
  • In 1992 Farm was shifted to Gallella and management was shifted to National Livestock Development Board.
  • After shifting the farm, buildings machines and equipments were abandoned and some were destroyed & some were removed by LTTE
  • After liberation of North and East, Commander of the Army ordered SLAGSC to restart the farm
  • Kandakadu Regimental farm was started on 07th October 2009
  • The farm was declared as a military farm from 01st May 2012 by an Army routing order ARO 61/2012 & dated 28th August 2012
