SECURITY FORCES (EAST) ORGANIZE A PROGRAMME TO ENHANCE TAMIL LANGUAGE PROFICIENCY AMONG SINHALA STUDENTS

As per the conceptual guidance of the Commander, Security Forces (East) Major General Prasanna Gunaratne RSP ndu psc IG, steps have been taken to teach each other’s languages to Sinhala and Tamil-speaking students in the East. At Present such programmes are being conducted at Welikanda, Sewanapitiya and Kokadicholai. Leaping a step forward another programme commenced at Kanthale Central College.

Accordingly, 75 Pupils studying in the Kanthale area was selected to attend a Tamil language program for a period of 06 months. The opening ceremony of the program was held on 10 February 2024 at Kanthale Central College. The Commander Security Forces (East) Major General Prasanna Gunaratne graced the occasion as the chief guest accompanied by Major General PAM Peiris RSP USP General Officer Commanding - 22 Infantry Division.

Addressing the gathering, the Commander of the Security Forces (East) emphasized the importance of learning each other’s language and its positive outcomes towards a meaningful reconciliation process. He further encouraged students to make use of this opportunity to improve their bilingual fluency, which will be an advantage in the time to come.

Further Commander Security Forces (East) said that there would be interactive sessions with the participation of students of both programs in the future with the aim of strengthening brotherhood and understanding of each other’s sentiments. The Commander, of Security Forces (East) and Mr. Lakpriya Bandara Principal of Kanthale Central College gave sincere gratitude and appreciation to Mrs.Sumithra Rathnayaka, Chairperson of the Samagi Desheeya organization for providing financial support to make this event a success.

Troops of 5th(V) Regiment Sri Lanka Artillery under 222 Infantry Brigade and 22 Infantry Division organized the event with the participation of religious leaders, senior Army officers, the Zonal Education Duputy Director-Kanthale, teachers, parents and students. The event was followed by a series of colorful cultural events performed by the school children.
