The newly constructed accommodation building for Army troops deployed for the security of the ancient Somawathiya Temple in Polonnaruwa was declared open by Hon. Sidney Jayarathne, M.P. Polonnaruwa District and Major General K P A Jayasekera WWV RSP USP psc the Commander Security Forces (East) on Thursday (25).
The religious ceremony was held, dignified by the presence of Maha Sangha, dignitaries, Officers & Other Ranks & a gathering of Buddhist devotees. The construction of this building was completed with the auspices of the Chief Incumbent of Somawathiya Temple Ven. Pahamune Sri Sumangala Thero and under the labouring assistance of the Army troops.
Unveiling the symbolic plaque, the building was opened by Hon. Sidney Jayarathne and Major General K P A Jayasekera WWV RSP USP psc. Thereafter, they planted saplings trees in the temple premises to mark the event and attended the Pirith Chanting session conducted by Maha Sangha at the newly constructed building.
Subsequently, the gathering took part in Gilanpasa Puja (tea and herbal offering) to the Chaitya with the devotees who flocked to the temple taking Puja under embellished umbrellas in a procession.
