Following instructions of General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, to protect and preserve archeological and historic sites from vandalism and encroachments by individuals and organized groups, the Commander Security Force (East) together with the gracious presence of the Governor of the Eastern Province made an inspection visit to the Sacred Nelugala prehistoric site on 22 February 2022.
The archaeologically unique, Batticaloa Nelugala prehistoric sacred premises is spread over an area of more than three hundred fifty acres in Perillawali Grama Niladhari Division of Eraurpattu in the Batticaloa district of the Eastern Province. The site consist with Rock Caves, Inscriptions, Ponds, Monuments and some other ruins with Stupa dating back to the 2nd and 3rd century BC. As well, it is associated with many other archeological sites in the area and constantly affected this uninhabited area by the treasure hunters and timber cutting.
Hence, prompt measures to be taken to preserve these archaeological sites and the forest reserves and also to ensure the security and the development of the nearby villages.
The Committee Member of the Asgiri Maha Sangha Sabha Ven. Ketakumbure Dhammarama Thero, the Governor of the Eastern Province Hon. Anuradha Yahampath, Commander Security Force (East), Major General Lal Chandrasiri, Senior Officers, Officers and the Officials of the Central Cultural Fund were present at the occasion.
