EAST TROOPS ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTE TO BEACH CLEANING

To coincide with the ongoing National Marine Resources Conservation Week and the International Coastal Cleanup Day-2022, the Security Forces-East launched several beach cleaning programmes covering highly polluted major coastal areas, littered with discarded wrappers, polythene, plastic bottles, empty beer cans, empty liquor bottles, etc.

These beach cleaning programmes were organized under the guidance of Major General Priyantha Jayawardane, Commander, Security Forces - East with a view to creating an attitudinal awakening of the general public and make them recognize the value of coastal and marine resources while attracting community contribution for beach cleanup efforts.

Accordingly, the troops of 18 Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment and 11 Battalion of Sri Lanka National Guard of the 241 Infantry Brigade in Ampara conducted a beach clearing programmes on 21, 22, 23 and 24 September at Pandirippu, Oluwil, Karthivu, and Ninthaur coastal areas with the support of the Sri Lanka Navy and the general publics living in the respective areas.

In addition to that, troops of the 242 Infantry Brigade, together with the 8 Battalion of Sri Lanka National Guard conducted a beach cleaning operation in Arugambe coastal belt with assistance of civilians in the area.

Meanwhile, the troops of the 231 Infantry Brigade extended support to clean the Kalladi coastal area. Further, the troops of 233 Infantry Brigade and 6 Battalion of Gajaba Regiment launched another beach cleaning project in respective areas as their contribution to this worthy cause and a large gathering of troops with all volunteers contributed to the drive with enthusiasm.
