COMMANDER SECURITY FORCE (EAST) INSPECTS THE RENOVATION OF ANCIENT DEEGAWAPIYA STUPA

The Commander Security Force (East), Major General Channa Weerasuriya visited the Historic Deegawapiya Templeon Wednesday (16) with the intention of reviewing the status quo of ongoing renovation of Deegawapiya Stupa. At first, the SF Commander inspected the project carried out by Army and Civil Security Department (CSD) to produce 25 million bricks to be used for the restoration of ancient Deegawapiya Stupa and later, called on the Chief Incumbent of the Deegawapiya temple, Ven. Mahaoya Sobhitha Thero and discussed matters of concern to the temple with focus on ongoing reconstruction of historic Deegawapiya Stupa.

According to the technical contributions and knowledge provided by archaeologists and officials of the Departmentof Archaeology, the restoration work of this Stupa is now underway with labour provided by the Army and Civil Security Department (CSD) along with the expertise of the Sri Lanka Army Engineers. The project is coordinated by the Headquarters 24 Infantry Division, Ampara.
