St. Michael’s College Batticaloa on Tuesday (29), gave an openhearted welcome to the Commander Security Force (East) Major General K P A Jayasekera WWV RSP USP ndc psc, when he arrived at the Weber, Stadium Batticaloa as the Guest of Honour for the Annual Inter House Sports meet 2019, at the invitation of its Principal, Mr. Pius Anandarajah.

The Commander on arrival was greeted to a salute, presented by school cadets before he was ushered to the main pavilion accompanied by the principal, teachers and the students of this premier Boys’ College. The day’s proceedings commenced with hoisting the National flag by the Commander and the National Anthem followed by the school song afterwards added dignity and pride to the event.

The gathering was inspired by the presence of the Bishop of Batticaloa Rt. Rev. Dr. Joseph Ponniah, Provincial Director of Education – Eastern Province Mr. M K M Mansoor along with eminent personnel who attended to encourage the students to showcase their talents by bringing greater glory to the college. The Commander then witnessed the outstanding talents of young athletes of the college amid thundering applause of the gathering during this colourful event of much significance to the school.

Towards the end of the event, the Commander was invited to give away the trophies and certificates to the achievers of sports meet accompanied by the Principal. During his address to the occasion, the Commander advised the young athletes upon the need of becoming versatile personalities who shine both in the academics and sports fields and highlighted that expecting his presence to these kinds of events would strengthen the mutual trust between the civil society and the Army. Further, he added that civil-military coordination fosters the reconciliation process in the Eastern Province.

The principal presented a memento to the Commander Security Force (East) in appreciation of his gracious presence to the event.
