BODHI PUJA AND SERMON ORGANIZED AT THE SECURITY FORCE HEADQUARTERS – EAST

Esala Full Moon Poya is a significant day in the Buddhist calendar. It was on an Esala Full Moon Poya Day that the Buddha arrived at the Deer Park in Isipathana to deliver His first sermon, the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, to the five ascetics—Ven. Kondañña, Vappa, Bhaddiya, Mahānāma, and Assaji. At the conclusion of this discourse, the eldest of the ascetics, Ven. Kondañña, attained the first stage of sainthood (Sotāpanna).

According to Buddhist history, many important events occurred on Esala Full Moon Poya. One such event was the conception of Prince Siddhartha in Queen Mahāmāyā’s womb. Buddhist literature also reveals that over a thousand years ago, Queen Mahāmāyā, in one of her past lives, had the same symbolic dream on an Esala Full Moon Poya Day. In Sri Lankan history, it is recorded that King Dutugemunu began the construction of the sacred Ruwanwelisaya Stupa on this very day.

With such historical and religious significance, Esala Poya continues to be a day of great reverence for Buddhists. In parallel with these observances, under the guidance and concept of the Commander, Security Forces (East), Major General J.S.B.W. Pallekumbura RWP RSP ndu psc, a Bodhi Puja and sermon were organized at the Security Forces Headquarters–East temple premises.

Venerable Delvita Meththakankara Thero was invited to lead the Puja and deliver a Dhamma sermon. The ceremony was held with several key intentions

To pay tribute to the fallen war heroes who made the supreme sacrifice

To pray for the speedy recovery of those injured in service

To invoke blessings for all personnel currently serving at the Security Force Headquarters–East and their families

The event provided a meaningful opportunity for all attendees to reflect on the teachings of the Buddha, engage in spiritual practices, and renew their commitment to moral values. These religious observances also help reinforce ideals of peace, compassion, and gratitude among military personnel.

The ceremony was attended by the Commander of Security Forces (East), senior and junior officers, other ranks, and civil servants, marking a solemn and spiritually enriching occasion.
