As an initiative suggested by Major General Prasanna Gunaratne RSP ndu psc IG, the Commander, Security Forces (East), troops of 233 Infantry Brigade organized an event to distributed nutrients dry ration packs among 80 pregnant mothers on Thursday (23Nov) at a simple ceremony held at Welikanda Cultural Centre.
The programme was fully funded by Mr. Saminda Jayathilake, a patriot Sri Lankan based in Australia on the request of the Commander, Security Forces (East). Mr. Jayathilaka spent over Rs: 600,000 rupees for this project and each pack cost around Rs: 7,500 rupees. The event was organized under the supervision of Colonel AKCS De Silva RSP, the Commander, 233 Infantry Brigade by the troops of 9th Field Regiment Sri Lanka Artillery under the leadership of Lt Col MIS Chandrakumara USP psc IG SLA, Commanding Officer, 9th Field Regiment Sri Lanka Artillery.
During the same event, a scholarship was offered to a needy student of Nelumwewa Maha Vidyalaya who excelled during the Garde Five Scholarship Examination. The scholarship is a cash grant worth of 10,000 rupees a month sponsored by Mr. Janith Bandara on the request of Major General Prasanna Gunaratne, which will continue till the student completes her Advance Level Examination.
Major General Prasanna Gunaratne, the Commander, Security Forces (East), graced the occasion as the Chief Guest and Mr. Saminda Jayathilake as the Guest of Honor. Major General Nilantha Premaratne, General Officer Commanding 23 Infantry Division, Colonel Kamal De Silva, the Commander, 233 Infantry Brigade, Staff Officers of Security Force Headquarters (East), and troops of 9th Field Regiment Sri Lanka Artillery took part of the event. Additional DS-Divisional Secretary, Welikanda, Mrs. MM Hairunisha, and other invitees also participated to the event.
