United Nations Environment programme is annually held on 5 June since 1973, and World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach and is celebrated by millions of people across the world. Some 11 million tones of plastic waste flow annually into oceans and this will may triple by 2040. An awareness and cleaning programme was conducted in line with the idea of the 50th World Environmental Day on reducing pollution by using plastic and polluting in also the Batticaloa town area.
231 Infantry Brigade together with members of Action Unity Lanka Organization organized the event on 05 June 2023. Government Agent- Batticaloa, Lieutenant Colonel Dammika Weearasinghe, Civil Affairs Officer, 231 Infantry Brigade, 01X15 troops of 231 Infantry Brigade, members of Action Unity Lanka Organization, and above 200 government service workers with civilians participated in the programme.
