Troops of the 22 Infantry Division of the SFHQ - East with the intention of promoting civil-military cooperation in Trincomalee District staged a Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival on 9 April at Trincomalee Fort Fredrick ground.
A large gathering of civilians and troops under command to the 22 Division enthusiastically participated in the traditional and fun-making features, associated with the Sinhala and Tamil New Year.
The festival was filled with a number of Sinhala and Tamil traditional events, tug-of-war, selection of the ‘Avurudu Kumari’ (New Year princess), eye-placing on the elephant, bun-eating, slow cycling, marathon runs and several other games.
The event was organized by the 221 Infantry Brigade with 2 (v) Gajaba Regiment and 17 Sri Lanka National Guard under the directions of 22 Infantry Division.
Major General S.B Amunugama RWP RSP ndu, General Officer Commanding of 22 Infantry Division graced the occasion as the Chief Guest.
Brigade Commanders of 222 and 223 Infantry Brigades, Senior Officers, troops of 22 Infantry Division and Mr. Debanjan Mukarji, Trincomalee IOC Vice Chairman, and civilians of the area participated in the event.
