HISTORY OF 233 INFANTRY BRIGADE HEADQUARTERS

The headquarters of this Infantry Brigade started as the 3^rd Brigade on 28 February 1991 and was renamed as the 233 Brigade on 14 July 1995 to achieve the goal of destroying the brutal terrorism and establishing peace in the island of Sri Lanka while engaged in operational duties between 10 October 1997 and 2004 the Brigade was stationed in the Batticaloa region for operational duty.

In the middle stage of attacks by LTTE terrorists, The 233 Brigade has implemented security plans to prevent terrorist attacks in the country by ensuring the security of the area and the security of the civilian population. The security of the main supply line has also been confirmed by brigade troops.

During the attacks of LTTE terrorists, Brigade was engaged in security duty to prevent terrorist attacks in Wakare area by ensuring the security of the Batticaloa area and the safety of the civilian population. Capturing an terrorist outpost by 14 SLNG on 04.10.2006 in Vangikittu in Batticaloa district and liberating the area and also the security of the area has been confirmed as a security brigade to facilitate the humanitarian operation in Eastern Province. Further, the Brigade has given security for the main supply route and coastal belt along the AOR.

After, destroying terrorist in Batticaloa district during Eastern humanitarian operations 233 Brigade has been redeployed as an infantry brigade on 28.02.2007 in Vakarai area in order to achieve the goal of bringing peace.

The brigade and under command troops destroyed the brutal terrorism in the Vakere area and established peace and security and re-settled the displaced civilians, built government institutions and carried out civil coordination duties.

The Brigade did a tremendous job during the period of attacks by LTTE terrorists, by removing the deadly landmines planted by them and other death traps, to ensure the security of the area and to resettle the displaced civilian population and upgrade their lives. The brigade assisted to repair the existing buildings and set up civil administration work for the government institutions that have been in a dilapidate state due to terrorist attacks during the war period and used for those tasks.
