In order to provide relief to civilians who were affected by the adverse weather conditions that impacted the island, a community welfare programme was conducted with the coordination of 22 Infantry Division and Major General A P I Fernando (Retired) RWP USP. Through the financial contributions of said Senior Officer’s Cousin sister, Dr. Yamani Gunawardhana, who resides in the United States of America, along with family members, dry ration packs were distributed to selected needy families in Morawewa area. This community service programme was held on 20 January 2026 at Divisional Secretariat Office - Morawewa, located within the Area of Responsibility of the 6 (Rft) Regiment Sri Lanka Armoured Corps.
The humanitarian initiative was carried out under the guidance and the coordination of the 221 Infantry Brigade, with the esteemed participation of the Commander 221 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier B A M C Beligaswatta RSP, along with Mr. A Naveshwaran, the Divisional Secretary of Morawewa and other government officials. The programme aimed to provide immediate relief to vulnerable families whose livelihoods were disrupted due to the recent natural disaster.
121 families from the Morawewa Divisional Secretariat area benefited from the distribution, receiving essential dry ration packs to address their urgent food requirements. The timely assistance reflected the Sri Lanka Army’s continued commitment to supporting civil authorities and assisting communities during times of crisis.
