Gajaba Regiment ceremonially bid farewell to one of its most esteemed members, General Shavendra Silva WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc MPhil, the first Gajaba Regiment officer to serve as Commander of the Sri Lanka Army and Chief of Defence Staff, was honoured by his regiment at Saliyapura on 29 December 2024. This recognition celebrates his exceptional military service and leadership, marking a historic milestone for both the Gajaba Regiment and the nation. His career, rooted in the legacy of the regiment’s founder, Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne, leaves a lasting inspiration for future military professionals.

This momentous occasion marks the culmination of an illustrious career spanning across forty-one years, the longest in Sri Lankan Armed Forces history, is celebrated for his unwavering dedication, exceptional leadership, and profound patriotism, leaving a lasting legacy of excellence and inspiration.

The farewell proceedings began with a solemn floral tribute at the Regimental Monument, a tribute to the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. This was followed by a Guard Turnout presented by the Gajaba Regiment troops, a mark of honour for the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff. A floral tribute was also offered to the statue of the late Major General Wijaya Wimalaratne RWP RSP VSV USP psc, the revered Father of the Regiment, further underscoring the event's historical and emotional significance.

A grand ceremonial parade, reflecting the pride and discipline of the Gajaba Regiment, marked the occasion. This trailblazer legend received by the Colonel of the Gajaba Regiment and the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General M G W W W M C Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc. General Shavendra Silva addressed the troops, paying tribute to Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne, the regiment's founder, and highlighting key infrastructure achievements during his tenure, including the headquarters, parade square, and cricket ground so on. He urged the regiment to uphold unity, professionalism, and high standards while honouring fallen soldiers who sacrificed their lives for peace and security in Sri Lanka. The event concluded with a symbolic sapling planting and a group photograph, celebrating the unity and camaraderie of the Gajaba Regiment.

As part of the farewell traditions, a Mess Night was held at the Officers’ Mess of the Gajaba Regiment. This dignified gathering allowed officers to pay tribute to the legacy of the outgoing Chief of Defence Staff and celebrate his significant achievements with respect and camaraderie.

General Shavendra Silva is a true patriot, a skilled leader, and an exemplary figure who has tirelessly served Sri Lanka. His continued dedication to the well-being of the Nation and its people is a testament to his unwavering commitment to the country's prosperity.
