The Gajaba Regiment ceremonially bid farewell to one of its most esteemed members, General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army, on 29th December 2024. This poignant event was a significant moment of respect and gratitude, recognizing his exemplary service and lasting contributions.
The Keterians family was fortunate to have served under the inspiring leadership of General Vikum Liyanage. His tenure marked one of the most remarkable eras in the Regiment’s history, elevating both physical and intellectual development to unprecedented heights. Notably, his era saw the highest number of middle-grade officers enrolling in the Defence Services Command and Staff College; a testament to his emphasis on professional growth.
Under his visionary direction, significant infrastructure developments were undertaken not only at the Regimental Centre but also at the battalion level. This included the construction of the King Keterians' “Legacy Suite” in the “Home of Gajaba” and the initiation of mammoth fundraising activities to benefit future generations. His administration also addressed and cleared potential hurdles for Officers, ensuring that capable Gajaba Officers were placed in key appointments across the Army.
General Liyanage's leadership extended beyond structural and administrative reforms. He introduced numerous welfare initiatives for the Sri Lanka Army, underscoring his empathy and dedication to the well-being of its members. Known for his humility, he maintained an unwavering commitment to treating every member of the Army regardless of rank, seniority, or appointment with respect and compassion.
The farewell proceedings began with a solemn floral tribute at the Regimental Monument, a tribute to the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice. This was followed by a Guard Turnout presented by the Gajaba Regiment troops, a mark of honour for the outgoing Commander. A floral tribute was also offered to the statue of the late Major General Wijaya Wimalaratne RWP RSP VSV USP psc, the revered Father of the Regiment, further underscoring the event's historical and emotional significance. This trailblazer legend received by the Colonel of the Gajaba Regiment and the Commandant of the Sri Lanka Army Volunteer Force, Major General M G W W W M C Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc. to this grand ceremonial parade, showcasing the Regiment’s pride and discipline, was held in accordance with military tradition. To commemorate the occasion, a group photograph was taken with all participants, symbolizing the unity and camaraderie of the Keterian family. A sapling was also planted within the Regimental premises, a gesture signifying growth, legacy, and continuity. During the All-Ranks Tea Session, General Vikum Liyanage engaged warmly with officers and other ranks, sharing reflections and expressing gratitude for their collective journey. The event concluded with the offering of a street line, where the troops of the Gajaba Regiment extended their heartfelt best wishes to the Army Chief as he departed, marking the end of a remarkable era of leadership. As part of the farewell traditions, a Mess Night was held at the Officers’ Mess of the Gajaba Regiment on the evening prior. This dignified gathering allowed officers to pay tribute to the legacy of the outgoing Commander and celebrate his significant achievements with respect and camaraderie.
