The 30th death anniversary of the legendry military leader in the Sri Lankan Military History, founder father of Gajaba Regiment Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne RWP RSP VSV USP psc was commemorated at Gajaba Regimental Centre, Saliyapura on 8 August 2022 with the guidance of Commander of the Army , Colonel of the Regiment of Gajaba Regiment and Sri Lanka National Guard and close supervision of Regimental Centre Commandant Brigadier Wishwajith Vidyananda RWP RSP USP. The occasion was graced by the Commander Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) Major General Champaka Ranasinghe RWP RSP as the representative of the Colonel of the Regiment.
The day’s proceedings were comprised of laying floral wreath to the statue of Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne and two-minute silence was observed in honour of the War Heroes who laid their lives for the motherland, took place by Commander Security Force Headquarters (Wanni) Major General Champaka Ranasinghe RWP RSP. Later, religious observances was climaxed with pirith chanting at the Buddhist temple of Regimental Centre.
Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa gallant war hero along with a team of renowned military commanders, Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne, Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha, Lt Col HR Stephen, Lt Col GH Ariyaratne, Lt Col YN Palipana, Commander Asanga Lankathilaka, Lt Col Nalin de Alwis, Lt Commander CB Wijepura and Private WJ Wickremasinghe were caught to a land mine blast at Araly Point on 08 August 1992 while they were on planning the capture of Jaffna Town.
Deputy Commandant Colonel Rajendra Wijerathne USP, Commanding Officer 22 GR, all staff officers and staff of the Regimental Centre were present at this ceremony.
