32nd Death Anniversary of Gajaba Regiment’s Founding Father Commemorated

A series of solemn ceremonies were held on 8 August 2024 to commemorate the 32nd death anniversary of the revered founding father of the Gajaba Regiment, late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne RWP RSP VSV USP psc. The commemoration ceremony was conducted under the guidance of Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Commander of the Army and Colonel of the Regiment of the Gajaba Regiment and Sri Lanka National Guard.

The day’s proceedings commenced with a floral tribute ceremony at the statue of the late Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne in Kiribathgoda, paying homage to his unparalleled contribution and sacrifices.

In the meantime, a religious event was held at the sacred Ruwanweli Maha Saya with the participation of gethering of Officers and Other Ranks of the Regimental Centre to invoking blessings and transfer merit to the patriotic leader the legendary warrior.

Further, in perellel to the commemorative ceremony a special programme was held at children's orphanage in Saliyspura where the children and all the staff members of the orphanage were treated with a delicious meal, reflecting the Gajaba Regiment's enduring commitment to the community welfare.

The day's series of commemorative events culminated with another solemn tribute at the Gajaba Regimental Centre at the statue of the Founding Father.

The event was attended by Major General Dinesh Udugama RWP RSP USP ndc psc Commander 59 Infantry Division, Centre Commandant along with Regimental Staff Officers and Other Ranks where they paid their honour and respect to the legacy of a remarkable leader who remains an enduring symbol of courage and dedication within the Sri Lanka Army.
