In keeping with the enduring commitment to the welfare of war heroes and their families, a newly constructed house was handed over to Lance Corporal Kumara Y M I S (S/468265) of the 14th Battalion, the Gajaba Regiment, in recognition of the immense sacrifices made by gallant soldiers in safeguarding the motherland.
Lance Corporal Kumara Y M I S sustained severe injuries to his abdominal and lung regions as a result of a mortar attack and exposure to chemical gas launched by terrorists.
In recognition of his courageous service, the construction of the new house was initiated with the financial assistance of the Army Seva Vanitha Unit and the constructions was completed with the financial contribution worth of 1.5 Million that donated by Mr Themiya De Mel, the overseas-based proprietor of TDM International Limited, whose support was facilitated through the efforts of Major General M N Fernando RSP, the General Officer Commanding of the 52 Infantry Division.
The construction of the house was supervised by the Centre Commandant and Commander, Reinforcement Troops, under the guidance and supervision of the Colonel of the Regiment, Major General U K D D P Udugama RWP RSP USP ndc psc, together with the President of the Gajaba Seva Vanitha Branch, Mrs Udari Anupama Gamage.
The symbolic handover of the newly constructed house to the war hero took place on 13 January 2026 under the patronage of the President of the Gajaba Seva Vanitha Branch, representatives of the donor, Mrs Nayanthi Kuruppu and Mr Brendon Kuruppu, the legendary cricketer, marking a meaningful gesture of gratitude and respect for his invaluable service to the nation.
