The 1 Gajaba Regiment in a powerful display of professionalism in sports, gained the Inter Battalion Rugby Sevens’ Championship title with a sounding win against the 20 Gajaba Regiment. The tournament was held at the Gajaba Regimental Centre Rugby Ground on 13th and 14th of January 2025.
The selection matches were marked by intense competitiveness, showcasing the extraordinary skills and determination of the players. After a series of riveting games, the 1 Gajaba Regiment and the 20 Gajaba Regiment emerged as the finalists, demonstrating their superior strategy and teamwork. As the ending score, 1 Gajaba Regiment outmuscles the 20 Gajaba Regiment by 10-5. Apart from the Championship, Private Kumara MS from the 1 Gajaba Regiment Rugby team was crowned as the best player in the tournament. Further, Lance Corporal Jayalath WK, a Grade 1 Division club-level referee and a member of the Army rugby pool from the Gajaba Regiment, officiated the matches.
Brigadier Thanuja Godewatte RWP RSP, the Centre Commandant of the Gajaba Regiment graced the final event as chief guest. The presence of the staff officers, officers and other ranks of the regiment further elevated the significance of the tournament, fostering camaraderie and esprit de corps among the participants.
This tournament not only highlighted the talents in the game of Rugby within the battalions but also reinforced the importance of sportsmanship and unity within the regiment. Players demonstrated their courage and resilience as they faced the challenging weather conditions, exhibiting exceptional teamwork and athleticism skills during the tournament.
