The 4 Armoured Regiment conducted a Unit Symposium, first of its kind at Clappenburg, Trincomalee on 26 August 2023. The symposium titled “Modern Trends in Armour Technology and Tactics” was aimed at enhancing knowledge of officers of the 4 Armoured Regiment on the subject while giving them much needed experience in event organizing, academic writing and research presentation.

Major General S W M Fernando WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc, Military Secretary and Colonel Commandant - SLAC, who was the mentor of the Unit Symposium concept attended as the Chief Guest. After the Commanding Officer 4 Armoured Regiment, Lieutenant Colonel D M V M R Dissanayaka RWP RSP psc welcomed the gathering; the Chief Guest addressed the symposium and emphasized the importance of acquiring, maintaining and updating of knowledge by the officers. “Being a professionally qualified officer in all dimensions serves as a pivotal catalyst for thriving and distinguishing oneself amidst a fiercely competitive environment” he added.

Academic sessions of the symposium unfolded with the Keynote Speech delivered by Brigadier W A S R Wijedasa WWV RSP USP ndc psc. The Session One which was dedicated to discuss modern trends in armour technology was chaired by a former Commanding Officer of the regiment, Lieutenant Colonel D P A S A Witharana psc. Major K B S S S Bandara psc assisted by Lieutenant T D DS Senapathi and Major P L K M Jayakody psc assisted by 2nd Lieutenant T J Wijesekara of 4 Armoured Regiment delivered their research findings on Modern Trends in Tank Firepower and Information Systems and Modern Trends in Tank Protection and Mobility, respectively.

The Session Two which discussed about modern trends in armour tactics was chaired by another former Commanding Officer of the regiment, Colonel W M I U B Weerasekara USP psc. During this session, another four officers of the regiment delivered their thoughts and findings. Firstly, Lieutenant Colonel U K K W M R A W I A B Kulatunge psc assisted by 2nd Lieutenant A A S A Amarasinghe covered the topic; Armour in Offensive Operations in the Modern Battlefield. The first segment of the Second Session was followed by Major K M K Samarasinghe USP psc with the assistance of 2nd Lieutenant A T P Alwis discussing on Armour in Defensive Operations in the Modern Battlefield.

The Unit Symposium 2023 of the 4 Armoured Regiment was summed up by Brigadier K M P S B Kulatunga RSP ndc psc. Major R Randeniya USP psc, the Second in Command delivered the Vote of Thanks which marked the culmination of the historic and educative event.

This unique academic endeavor was attended by Commander Security Forces Central, Commander Armoured Brigade, Deputy GOC 22 Infantry Division, Commandant Army School of Logistics, Brigade Commanders of 22 Infantry Division and a host of senior and junior Armoured Corps officers.
