9 SLSC INVENTION AMONG THE BEST IN KILINOCHCHI

A new alcohol indicator invented by 9 SLSC that created using Ardiuno circuit, gas sensor and a control circuit that can be used for a long time won the 2nd place among the 50 inventions that were exhibited by Divisions, Brigades and units of the Security Forces - Kilinochchi during the \"INNOVATIONS 2017\" competition held on 26th and 27th May 2017 at \'Nelum Piyasa\' auditorium in Kilinochchi. This new invention was invented by Major T T N Mendis (OC COMM - 9 SLSC), Corporal Ranasinghe R A K L and Lance Corporal Jayamaha J M G S under the guidance and supervision of the Commanding Officer - 9 SLSC Lieutenant Colonel P W M M D Wijeratne RSP USP. \r\n\r\nThis invention indicates the level of alcoholic consumption through a line of LED indicators that activate as the accuse blow through the breath inlet of the equipment. This also has few but significant advantages such cost, can be made locally, no need to extract blood and reusability when compare with the existing some other systems use to detect personnel consumed alcohol. This is very low in its production cost as lower as Rs 3000/-, which is considerably lower than the expenditures of other electronic indicators that have been invented up to now.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nNew Electronic Alcochol Indicator\r\n\r\nIn Sri Lanka a person dies in every 3 ½ hours due to vehicle accidents whereas most of the accidents are occurred due to the drunkenness of vehicle drivers.\r\n\r\nIt was identified earlier that the best indicator to take these offenders under the police custody as the Blood Alcohol Concentration – (BAC). Since it is beyond the realism to always collect blood sample and do laboratory tests, many scientists were in a process of seeking for alternative ways. The scientists who did experiments by observing the way of absorbing alcohol to the blood and exhalation of air through the lungs identified that the concentration of alcohol in exhalation air is an indicator to the BAC level. Afterward the suspected drivers are ordered to blow into a chemical solution of Dichromate and suspects were identified through the chemical colour change take place. The Alcoholizer tube technology which is presently used by Sri Lanka\'s Motor Traffic Police was also developed based on the previous experiments, which are seems to be disadvantageous because of its one time use and the high annual expenditure of importing whereas this invention would be a greater solution in the field.\r\n
