SIGNAL BRIGADE

The Signal Brigade was established on 15th June 1988 as per the Army Routine Order ARO 28/88 as an independent institution within the Army Headquarters premises. Due to the rapid expansion of the Sri Lanka Army, Signal Brigade was separated and the Headquarters Chief Signal Officer was established as a separate entity on 12 March 2007 under the Army Order ARO 44/2007. The Sri Lanka Signals Corps was raised on 19th October 1943 as a Volunteer squadron. Ceylon Defence Force was established with a regular Signal squadron after the independence. With the expansion of Ceylon army, Signal squadron was elevated as a Regiment and 1st Regiment of Sri Lanka Signal Corps was established on 14th October 1958. The 4th Signal Regiment claims a proud history of over 22 years from its inauguration at Panagoda Army Cantonment on 05 June 1991 to the present deployment at Anuradhapura. All ranks of this Unit claim a high degree of professional competence and combat readiness due to their previous deployments on both communications and internal security operations throughout the Island. As such, the Unit had been deployed in Kandy from July 1991 to January 1992, in Kalladi from January 1992 to August 1994, at Panagoda from August 1994 to July 1995, at Vasavilan from July 1995 to 2007 and finally at Anuradhapura from 2007 to date. Sri Lanka Signal Corp does posses a long standing history from its inception from the, then Ceylon Army which was raised by the British, way back in 1948. Primary task of it was to provide communications for both operational and administrative commitments in the Army. Deviating from that on the necessitated demand that the Sri Lankan Army faced with in the 1990s to face the bitter fighting of the menace of terrorism, a decisive decision was took, to form RFT regiments from the support arms of the Army, merely to perform the infantry duties since the Army did face a serious scarcity of infantry troops to fight the threat posed by the terrorists.
