5th Regiment Sri Lanka Signal Corps inaugurated their newly constructed Regiment Headquarters building at a ceremonial opening held on 03 January 2018 at the camp premises in Menerigama, PADUKKA. This special occasion was organized in line with the 24th Anniversary Celebrations of the unit that fall on 2nd January 1994.
Present Colonel Commandant of the Corps of Signals and Chief Signal Officer Maj Gen B H M A Wijesinghe USP ndu psc graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest. Former Colonel Commandant and former Chief Signal Officer, present Director General Research Analysis Projection and Development Branch of the Sri Lanka Army Maj Gen K R P Rowel RWP USP ndu USACGSC along with the 1st Commanding Officer of 5 SLSC Maj Gen (Rtd) E P De Z Abeysekera VSV USP and all the past Commanding Officers attended the ceremony on the invitation of the present Commanding Officer Lt Col B D Fernando USP psc.
Ceremony started by awarding a Guard Turnout to the Chief Guest on his arrival to the premises that was followed by a series of activities such as unit-line visit, presenting of unit mementoes, a tea party and special lunch at the end.
The 5th Regiment SLSC (RFT) was raised at the Devahuwa Army camp on the 2nd January 1994. That was under the command of then Maj E P De Z Abeysekera as the first reinforcement battalion of the Corps of Signals, which was raised for the deployment only on infantry role for both offensive and defensive operations. Since then unit served in different operational areas, particularly in the Eastern Theatre of Operations fighting against the prolonged terrorism, facilitating the dawn of the respectable peace in the country in 2009 and aftermath until 2014. As with the peacetime demand of the provision of communication in and outside the Army, the 5 SLSC (RFT) was converted into classic Signal role on 24th September 2014.
