As per the guidance of the Commander, Security Forces (West), Major General Lanka Amarapala RWP RSP ndc psc, west troops have been actively involved in emergency flood relief services in response to the heavy rains that affected in the Security Forces (West) AOR.
A total of 02 X 49 troops from the 2(V) Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry, 8 Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry, and 2(V) Battalion Sri Lanka Army Service Corps, under the command of the 14 Infantry Division, participated in flood relief operations in the affected areas. These troops worked to clear the Kelani River bank and placed 150 sandbags on both sides of the road leading to Valekwima. This effort was aimed at reinforcing the riverbank to protect against sudden flooding in the Malwana lowlands, rescuing affected victims, and providing disaster relief. Troops also assisted in transporting seriously injured individuals, who were stranded due to the flood, to rescue centers as quickly as possible.
Additionally, 02 X 30 troops from the 1 Battalion Sri Lanka National Guard and 9 Battalion Sri Lanka National Guard, under the command of the 57 Infantry Division, participated in operations to fortify the lake embankment at Kurunegala, specifically around the Thibiriththan Kadavara Jayawadana tank, where the water level of Jayawadana Lake had risen significantly.
Due to the ongoing heavy rains, 9,367 families have been displaced, and they are currently sheltered in relief centers. Army troops continue to provide them with cooked food and other essential services, ensuring their well-being during this challenging time.
