Due to the heavy rains and floods that affected the Matara district since October 02, troops of 9th Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment,2(V)Gamunu Watch,3(V) Gamunu Watch of 613 infantry brigade belongs to 61 infantry division under Security Forces Headquarters (West)joined hands with the Divisional Secretariat, Disaster Management Center, Police and Navy officials for evacuation, relief and relocation of stranded people who were affected by floods.
As the result of intensified rainfall that paved path for rose up the flood level,the people in Thihagoda and Malimbada divisional secretariat areas had to evacuate their houses.
Also,3 (v)Gamunu Watch troops immediately repaired and patched up a place that prone to collapse due to heavy floods in Sultangoda Warakapitiya road belonging to the Malimbada divisional Secretariat.Also, troops of 3(v) Gamunu watch made arrangements to hospitalize the sick people by using their boat services.As well as the troops of 3 (v) Gamunu Watch repaired a leaking rock bund due to torrential rains at Matara Attudawa, and the troops contributed to prevent the soil erosion by laying sand bags.
These series of evacuation,rescue and relief missions are successfully conducted by the directions of the Commander Security Forces (West) and the guidance of the Commander 61 infantry division and the close supervision of the 613 Brigade Commander along with the Commanding Officers of 9 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment and 2 (v) Gamunu Watch and 3 (v) Gamunu Watch respectively.
Moreover,the Troops were able to evacuate civilians, remove fallen trees and debris, provide protection for displaced homes and belongings, provide quick relief and repair roofs, and the swift action of troops prevented major damage from the floods.
