Due to the recent heavy rains in the Matara District, Thihagoda and Malimbada Divisional Secretariat areas were heavily affected by floods on 04 October 2023. However, the Army troops, along with various government agencies, including the District Secretariat, and Disaster Management Centre, have been working effortlessly since 02 October 2023 to provide humanitarian assistance to relief and restore civil life in the affected areas.
Thereby, under the direction of the Commander Security Forces (West) with the guidance of the General Officer Commanding 61 Infantry Division and the close supervision of the Commander 613 Infantry Brigade, troops of 9 SLSR and 2(V) GW have been involved in the humanitarian assistance operations.
This mission includes transporting personnel, removing fallen trees and debris, assisting in protecting of household items, houses and buildings and ensuring the continuation of essential services in the area. The troops have been working diligently to assist the smooth functioning of the government agencies and the community to survive the disaster.
The collaboration between the army troops and other government agencies has been vital in coordinating rescue operations effectively. The combined efforts have enabled the situation to be brought back to normalcy, providing relief to the affected communities.
Further, the dedication and commitment shown by the Army troops in carrying out their rescue operations deserve commendation. Their efforts have not only helped in restoring infrastructure but also provided a sense of security and hope to the stranded people.
