WORKSHOP ON HUMAN RIGHTS & INTERNATIONAL HUMANITARIAN LAW

1 Sri Lanka National Guard troops of 143 Infantry Brigade of Security Forces (West) recently organized a three-day workshop on Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law, under the instruction of the Army Headquarters. This workshop, which was held on 16, 17, and 18 May 2023 at the 1 Sri Lanka National Guard camp premises, aimed to educate the officers and other ranks on various concepts of human rights and international humanitarian law.

The workshop was conducted by Major R. M. C. M. Siriwardana, Captain K. H. N. Wijepala, and Mr W. Wasantha, Chief Inspector of Wariyapola Police Station. Similarly, this workshop focused on several aspects of human rights and international humanitarian law, including the principles of human dignity, non-discrimination, and respect for human life. It also covered the role of International Humanitarian Law in armed conflict, as well as the rights of prisoners of war and civilians in times of war.

Further, through this workshop, the participants gained a better understanding of their obligations and responsibilities regarding human rights and international humanitarian law. It also provided them with the necessary skills to apply these principles in their day-to-day work, particularly in situations where they are called upon to provide security and maintain law and order.

More than 100 troops of 1 Sri Lanka National Guard, including Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks were present at the workshop.
