Present day, under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the Disaster Management Center conducts several programmes on the topic of 'Tsunami Preparedness', including theoretically and practically (mock drills) for schools with high tsunami risk near the coastal belt areas of southern province.
In line with the aforesaid programmes, a workshop was held on 1 and 3 March 2023 by the Disaster Management Center, with the participation of around 1000 students, school staff and parents at the school premises of Kumara Kashyapa Kanishta Vidyalaya, Madampagama and Madampa Maha Vidyalaya, Madampagama, which are situated very near to the Ambalangoda Madampe coastal belt.
Similarly, as per the response to the request made by the Disaster Management Center, Lt Colonel J E L de Soyza , Civil Affairs Officer of the 61 Infantry Division, along with several other ranks, also participated in this invaluable workshop under the guidance of the General Officer Commanding the 61 Infantry Division with the blessing of Commander Security Forces (West) in order to upgrade their knowledge base on tsunami disaster relief operations.
Further, in the recent past, West troops played a vital role by conducting many relief operations together with the Disaster Management Center in different disaster situations in their area of responsibility.
Moreover, Mr. Sunil Jayaweera, the Director of Preparedness Planning at the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), Lt Colonel R L D Liyanage RSP, the Assistant Director of Distric Disaster Management Coordinating Unit (DDMCU), District Secratariat, Galle and government officials also were present at the two-day workshop.
