A renovated COVID-19 ward at the De Soysa Maternity Hospital - Borella was declared open by the Commander Security Forces (West) Major General K Liyanage RWP RSP ndu with the participation of Dr. Asela Guanawardhna Director General Health Services, Dr. Upuli Wijemanna Director of De Soysa Maternity Hospital and few medical staff of De Soysa Maternity Hospital on 16 December 2021. At the auspicious time, the Chief Guest, Major General K Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, Director General Health Services, Director of De Soysa Maternity Hospital, Army personnel and medical staff joined the oil-lamp lighting.
On the direction of the Head, National Operation Centre for Prevention of COVID-19 Outbreak (NOCPCO), Chief of Defence Staff and the Commander of the Army General Shavendra Silva, this abandoned building was improvised as a Covid - 19 ward within a short period of time by the troops of 1 Engineer Service Regiment and Garrison Engineers (Narahenpita) under the close supervision of Security Forces Headquarters (West) and the Commanding Officer of 1 Engineer Service Regiment. The Newly opened COVID -19 ward is consisted with 70 beds, ICU, essential medical equipments and sanitary facilities.
The opening session was followed by a simple ceremony and Col S M S Samarakoon Chief Coordinator Civil Affairs of Security Forces Headquarters (West), Lt Col P A A S Perera Commanding Officer of 1 Engineer Service Regiment, Maj Y R J Darmarathne Garrison Engineer (Narahenpita) associated at the location.
