Intending to speed up the flood relief effort, SF - West continue to assist civilians and respective government authorities in the area.
Major General Vikum Liyanagae, Commander, Security Forces - West inspected the progress of relief operations in Biyagama, kaduwela areas on 04 June 2021 and Ja –Ela and Kelaniya on 06 June. During the visit, he directed ground troops to work on all possible ways to assist civilians, also spoke to some civilians affected by flood and inquired into their health concerns and other difficulties too.
Troops of 2 Sri Lanka Light Infantry under command to 144 Infantry Brigade managed to rescue over 450 civilians in Kaduwela, Kotte and Kollonnawa on 5th and 6th June. Further they provided 3000 cooked meal packets to displaced persons on 6th June with the assistance of government authorities of the area.
Meanwhile, Troops of 8 Sri Lanka Light Infantry under command to 141Infantry Brigade hurriedly attended to some splits on the banks of Dandugamoya, a tributary of Attanagalu Oya, close to the Bodhi Rajaramaya road at Thummodara after water leakage caused flood levels to go up to 5 feet.
Troops using sand bags managed to repair the bank split, together with a group of fellow-naval troops. Villages of Idimitiya village were affected due to this leakage.
Backing up the effort of Committed Army troops with unfailing efforts, Major General Vikum Liyanage, Commander Security Forces - West visited the venue while troops were attending to the emergency.
All of these rescue and relief operations were done on the instructions of General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army, with the supervision of Commander Security Forces - West.
Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa, General Officer Commanding 14 Infantry Division together with respective Brigade commanders and commanding officers continue those emergency measures.
