Media Conference on Launching of the Nature Conservation Project by Security Force Headquarters (West)
Sri Lanka being an island nation it is imperative to protect the coastal belt from natural and manmade hazards. At present, due to erosion and degradation the coastal belt is facing destruction. Accordingly Commander Security Forces (west) has taken the initiative to rectify the present status by organizing a Natural Conservation Project targeting Security Force (west) Area of Responsibility.\r\nThe media conference to introduce the Natural Conservation Project was held at Security Forces Headquarters (West) on 26th August 2015, headed by Commander Security Forces (west) Maj Gen UAB Medawela RSP USP ndu psc with the participation of Mr Gamini Hewage, Deputy Director Coastal Conservations and Costal Resource Department, Mrs HAP Prashadini Assistant Conservations of Forest, Dr Thilak Siriwardane Director Non Communicable Disease Unit, Dr Ranil Senanayake System Ecologies, Mr Krish Dharamakirthi National Maritime Affairs, Maj Gen KC Gunawardana RWP USP ndu GOC 58 Div, Brig PJ Gamage RWP RSP USP - GOC 14 Div - Brig KJayanath Jayaweera RWP RSP Director Army Media. \r\nSince the coastal area is heavily damaged due to sea erosion and the environment is drastically polluted due to various reasons, Security force Headquarters (West) is in the process of taking remedial measures to launch a natural conservation project. The project would be launched keeping in line with government policy to conserve and develop the costal belt as well as land areas of Sri Lanka, in collaboration with Coastal Conservation and Coastal Resource Department, Department of Forest Conservation and Local Government Authorities. Project will be ceremonially launched in Preethipura, Wattala Coastal area. Initially 100000 plants of different varieties will be planted along the Coastal belt as well as in the inland areas.\r\nFurther, Security Force Headquarters (west) will be taking steps to formulate and effect an action plan to safeguard and improve the eco system in the Area of Responsibility. This project could be the flagship project to expand the coastal and land conservation beyond Security Forces Headquarters (west) AOR to rest of the areas as well.
