Army, Navy & Airmen Assist Flood Victims in Kalutara District & Clear Roads

Sri Lanka Army Directorate of Operations responding to inclement weather conditions and floods that are raging in Kalutara District, particularly in areas such as Meegastenna, Pelawatte, Agalawatte and adjoining areas, has taken steps to provide the victims with cooked food packets and alternative housing arrangements until the weather returns to normal. By Monday (2) morning, the Army organized a few hundreds of cooked meal packets for the victims in Pelawatte and distributed with the assistance of Sri Lanka Navy troops who are equally engaged in rescue and relief emergency services. With the coordination of the Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West), two more Army battalions have been kept as reserves in case the situation worsens, according to Director Operations at Army Headquarters. On the directions of the Commander of the Army, the SFHQ-West in coordination with tri-service personnel has already sent troops to those affected areas for provision of all possible humanitarian assistance to the flood victims. Meanwhile, the troops assisted some people affected by landslides in respective areas in the past two days as they became helpless in returning to their places of residence. In the meantime, troops serving the 142 Brigade of the SFHQ-West on Sunday (1) promptly came forward and cleared fallen trees in Makola South - Mawaramandiya road which remained not motorable due to torrential rains. Sector 8 troops within a few hours completed the job and made the road passable to traffic. Similarly, troops of the 142 Brigade attended to cleaning of clogged water and floods in Ragama, Duwawatte and Kerawalapitiya areas.
