On the directions of Major General Vikum Liyanage, Commander, Security Forces - West, with the supervision of General Officer Commanding of 14 Infantry Division and Commander 142 Brigade, 3 Officers and 20 Other Ranks of 10 Sri Lanka National Guard took immediate steps to avoid a split in the kelani river bund in Hanwella area on Friday (21) morning due to prevailing adverse weather condition. Troops hurriedly started to stack sandbags and boulders to cover and renovated most vulnerable area in order to prevent its further deterioration in consultation with officials of the Department of irrigation.
Meanwhile, Major General Vikum Liyanage, Commander, Security Forces – West visited the affected area on Saturday (22) and inspected the progress of the work. The Divisional Secretary of Seethawaka DS Division Mrs KS Dilhani and Irrigation engineer (Colombo) Mr Janaka Wicramasooriya who were present at the location appreciated the prompt respond of troops. Further, Commander SF - West directed officers and troops to complete the project with minimum possible time.
The project is still continuing and will be brought to completion after stacking sandbags and boulders in the affected area which is over 60 meters length.
