In conjunction with the World Wetlands Celebration - 2023, a programme was organized by the Central Environment Authority in coordination with the District Secretariat Office, Matara, to remove Acacia plants and other invasive plants in the ‘Kirala Kele’ sanctuary situated in Matara on 02 February 2023.
Accordingly, as requested by the Central Environment Authority and District Secretary's Office, Matara, with the direction of the Commander Security Forces (West) and under the guidance of the General Officer Commanding, 61 Infantry Division, along with the Brigade Commander of 613 Infantry Brigade, a contingent of Army personnel belonging to 3 (v) Battalion Gemunu Watch, including one Officer and 20 Other Ranks lent their manpower to remove invasive plants from the sanctuary by conducting several fatigues.
Furthermore, officials of government institutions, local residents and students who studying at the University of Ruhuna also extended their support for this community programme. The Commanding Officer of 3 (v) Battalion Gemunu Watch closely supervised the Army's involvement.
