In the morning hours on 08 August 2023, a devastating fire broke out at the Global Care Products Company (Pvt) Ltd factory in Kandana. The fire caused significant damage to the complex, and immediate action was required to control the situation. Thereby, as per the directions of the Commander of the Army as well as guidance given by the Commander Security Forces (West), the troops of the 8 Battalion Sri Lanka Light Infantry of 141 Infantry Brigade and 2 (v) Sri Lanka Army Service Corps, under the command of the Security Forces (West), swiftly responded and provided their fullest support.
Accordingly, a contingent of 70 Army personnel, along with Sri Lanka Navy personnel and officials from the Fire Brigade of Gampaha and Negombo, worked tirelessly to extinguish the fire in mid-afternoon. Their combined efforts and dedication ensured that the fire was brought under control, preventing further damage to the complex and nearby areas.
The 141 Infantry Brigade Commander, along with the respective Commanding Officers, personally attended to this emergency situation and provided necessary directions to the ground troops. Their presence and guidance were crucial in coordinating the efforts of the troops and ensuring an effective response to the fire.
In addition to their firefighting duties, the troops also assisted in the evacuation of students from the nearby St. Sebastian's College. The emissions from the factory fire had affected the school, and it was necessary to ensure the safety and well-being of the students. The troops assisted with the admission of these students to the hospital, ensuring that they received the necessary medical attention.
The prompt and efficient response of the troops in both controlling the fire and assisting the affected students highlights their dedication to serving the community. Their actions demonstrate the values of bravery, selflessness, and compassion that are at the core of their profession.
