A massive beach cleaning programme in Weligama, spearheaded by the Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West) with the support of hundreds of troops of the 3 Gemunu Watch and 14 Gemunu Watch of the 581 Brigade under the 58 Division and other stakeholders got underway on Thursday (5).
Troops with the staff at Divisional Secretariat, Weligama, Pradeshiya Sabhawa, Urban Council Weligama, the Coastal Guard Unit at Mirissa, employees of tourist hotels at Weligama launched the cleaning programme along this beach patch of tourist attraction.
Major General Mahinda Mudalige, Commander, Security Forces - West was the Chief Guest at the inauguration of the project, close to the Hotel Marriott at Weligama.
Major General Jayantha Gunaratna, General Officer Commanding 58 Division, Brigadier Manoj Lamahewa, Commander 581 Brigade and several other distinguished invitees attended the inaugural occasion.
A total of 135 Army personnel contributed to the project.
