8 Sri Lanka Light Infantry (SLLI) troops of the 14 Division under Security Forces (West) on being informed by civilians and local authorities of a heavy flood water blockade in the ‘Irriya Ela’ at Wattala rushed to the location and cleared it within a couple of hours before water levels spill and cause havoc in the Wattala township on 26 May.
With the increase of torrential rains, water level in the ‘Irriya Ela’ canal began to swell threatening a possible water spill.
Troops despite torrential rains went on removing watery plants and other blocking elements in the canal and facilitated the speedy flow of flood water.
