In recognition of the swift and bravery initiatives of a group of troops from the 3rd (V) Gemunu Watch, a specially dedicated brief ceremony to appreciate and honor their bravery effort was held, in the presence of Major General Lanka Amarapala RWP RSP ndc psc, the Commander Security Forces (West), at the Security Forces Headquarters (WEST) on Wednesday (2nd).
At a brief ceremony, the Commander Security Forces (West) awarded certificates of commendation to an Officer and four Other Ranks for their swift and courageous actions in saving a person who attempted suicide by jumping into the Nilwala River on 30th September 2024. Led by a senior Officer, the soldiers promptly responded and rescued the individual from drowning.
Their rapid response and bravery brought honor to the Sri Lanka Army, reflecting their unwavering commitment to serve and protect the people in times of crisis Major S. Indika GW, Sergeant Daluwaththa A D, Private Jayasingha D M U S, Private Warnakulasuriya W M S, and Private Lakmal K L T, the members of the team who were on the rescue operation, were honored during this ceremony.
During the course of ceremony, Major General Lanka Amarapala remarked his admiration for their swift and courageous actions, highlighting how their efforts had brought a great pride to the Sri Lanka Army. Extending best wishes for the team, the Commander Security Forces (West) stressed that their actions stood as a shining example of bravery and whole-hearted commitment, an inspiration to their fellow soldiers and the military as a whole.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Commander of Security Forces (West), Major General Y A B M Yahampath RWP RSP ndu psc, the General Officer Commanding of 61 Infantry Division, Major General K H M S Wikramaratne RSP, Brigadier General Staff, Brigadier B P G K Balasooriya RSP psc and Staff Officers of the Security Forces (West).
This commendation not only serves as personal recognition for these brave soldiers but also highlights the core values of the Sri Lanka Army; courage, selflessness, and responsibility. Their actions during the Nilwala River rescue will be remembered as a symbol of unwavering service to the nation.
