Troops of 8 Sri Lanka Light Infantry under command to 14 Infantry Division of the Security Force Headquarters - West (SFHQ-West) promptly responded on 03 June and rescued a woman (59) and a physically-handicapped man of 65 years of age trapped in a house in general area of meerigama , Bookulagama after heavy rains caused havoc in the past 48 hours.
Meanwhile, on the same day Troops of 10 SLNG under command to 142 Infantry Brigade under the SF HQ (West) provided timely assistance to clear Embulgama Raja Maha Viharaya premises in Hanwella, which remained obstructed with fallen trees, branches, fronds and other obstacles.
All of these rescue and relief operations were done on the instructions of General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army and with the supervision of Major General Vikum Liyanage, Commander Security Forces – West.
Major General Sujeewa Senarath Yapa, General Officer Commanding, 14 Infantry Division, Brigadier Pradeep Gamage, Commander 141 Infantry Brigade and Brigadier Nilantha Fernando, Commander, 142 Infantry Brigade, together with respective commanding officers carried out those emergency measures.
