SECURITY FORCES HEADQUARTERS (WEST) TEAM WON THE ‘COMMANDER'S CHALLENGE TROPHY VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT – 2023’

In parallel to the Sinhala Hindu New Year festival, as per the directions of the Commander Security Forces (West), Major General D M K D B Pussella RWP RSP, the ‘Commander's Challenge Trophy Volleyball Tournament – 2023’ kicked off from 0900 onward at the Sri Lanka Army Service Corps volleyball ground and Sri Lanka Army General Service Corps ground, Army cantonment – Panagoda from 27 to 29 March 2023.

Ten teams, including the Security Forces Headquarters (West), Divisions and Brigades teams vied for supremacy in the tournament under two tables until the finalists, the Security Forces Headquarters (West) team and 143 Infantry Brigade team, were selected to face the final encounter.

Accordingly, the final match was conducted at the Army Gymnasium Army Cantonment - Panagoda, on 03rd April 2023. Thereby, the Security Forces Headquarters (West) team beat the 143 Infantry Brigade team by three to nil with the following awards:

Most valuable player of the tournament: Lance Corporal Devinda D H S - SFHQ (West).

Best Attacker: Lance Corporal Madushan P H I U - 143 Inf Bde.

Best Setter: Lance Corporal Sandaruwan P V R - SFHQ (West).

Best Libero - Private Chathuranga - SFHQ (West).

Meanwhile, adding colour to the grand finale, the participants delighted in several entertainment events that were presented by the Sri Lanka Army Performing Arts.

Major General D M K D B Pussella RWP RSP, the Commander Security Forces (West), hosts the occasion as the chief guest and witnessed the final match. With the culmination of the day’s event, before departure from the location, the Commander Security Forces (West) congratulated both team members for their future endeavours.

Moreover, the awarding of trophies and certificates for the event will be held on 10 April 2022 followed by a Musical Night with the participation of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General H L V M Liyanage RWP RSP ndu as the chief guest.

The finals were attended by the General Officer Commanding, 61 Infantry Division, several senior officers of Security Forces Headquarters (West), Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, Other Ranks and volleyball fans.
