The troops of 3 (v) Battalion Gemunu Watch of 613 Infantry Brigade under Security Forces (West) located at the edge of River Nilvala - Matara, have launched a daring rescue operation to rescue a 74-years-old man who attempted to suicide by leaping into River Nilwala from the Matara Mahanama bridge at around 2000 hrs on 19 November 2022.
As soon as the incident was reported, the rescue operation got underway in Matara after the Overlooking Commanding Officer of 3 (v) Battalion Gemunu Watch and his troops rushed by a boat immediately to rescue the said person. Thereby, a few of them had jumped and managed to cling to the boat in the middle of the river.
As per the initial reports, the lifesaving team managed to successfully retrieve the man following a short rescue mission. After the first aid, he has been transferred to General hospital Matara for further treatments.
Moreover, these types of rescue missions have uplifted the Army’s image among civilians and the Overlooking Commanding Officer and troops of 3 (v) Battalion Gemunu Watch have been appreciated by many senior officers.
