Army Inter-Regiment Cricket Championship Produces New Records
The Army Inter-Regiment Cricket Championship-2015 concluded on Friday (10) evening at Muththukumaru Cricket grounds at Panagoda Army Cantonment, generating a wave of overwhelming enthusiasm and drawing a mammoth crowd of cricket fans to the pitch.
The month long tournament was organized by the Army Cricket Committee, chaired by Major General Ubaya Medawela, saw 24 teams representing 16 Army Regiments and Sri Lanka Military Academy(SLMA), vied for the Championship under two Divisions -\'A\' and \'B\'.
Sri Lanka Artillery (SLA) and Sri Lanka Army Ordnance Corps (SLAOC) Cricket teams qualified for the Finals in both \'A\' and \'B\' Divisions.
The finals of the \'B\' Division were held on Thursday (9) where SLA cricket team beat SLAOC cricket team to emerge as \'B\' Division champions.
The finals of the \'A\' Division were held on Friday (10) evening. Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva graced the occasion as Chief Guest at the invitation of the Army Cricket Committee to watch the finals and distribute awards.
Major General Ubaya Medawela warmly received the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva on arrival at the venue.
SLAOC cricket teams beat SLA cricket team in the \'A\' Division finals to emerge as champions.
Sri Lanka Army Cricket Committee has been working tirelessly to promote and rejuvenate cricket among officers and other ranks. As a result, Army cricketers have succeeded in securing a string of victories in the past few years.
Lieutenant General Crishanthe De Silva, after extending his warm congratulations presented the “A†Division Championship Trophy to the winning SLAOC team amidst a thundering applause.
Winners of the \'B\' Division and the women\'s cricket tournament were also awarded trophies.
Major General Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Adjutant General, Major General R.V Udawatte, Colonel Commandant, SLAOC, Major General B.A Perera, Director General General Staff, Major General Ajith Wickremasingha, Director General Supply and Transport, Major General K.R.P Rowel, Chief Signal Officer and several senior officers attended to the occasion.
