On 11 January 2024, responding to a Ministry of Health request, the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, deployed troops from the Sri Lanka Army to government hospitals affected by an island-wide strike led by minor staff trade unions in the health sector. The mission aimed to ensure uninterrupted essential health services across the country.
As per the guidance of the Commander Security Forces (West) Major General SWM Fernando WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc troops were strategically placed in Balangoda, Eheliyagoda, Karapitiya, Mahamodara, Kamburupitiya, and Matara Hospitals. The operation, was supervised by Major General RAJN Ranasinghe RSP USP ndc along with the respective Brigade Commanders of the 61 Infantry Division. Thereby, under command battalions such as the 8 Gemunu Watch, 9 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, 2 (V) Gemunu Watch, and 3 (V) Gemunu Watch actively involved the mission participating significant number of troops.
