61 INFANTRY DIVISION TROOPS CONDUCT BEACH CLEARING PROJECT

On 27 March , 2023, with the approval of Commander Security Forces (West), Major General D M K D B Pussella RWP RSP, a contingent of Army personnel, including officers of the 613 Infantry Brigade, 3 (v) Battalion Gemunu Watch, and 14 (v) Battalion Gamunu Watch, launched a beach clearing project as a community programme in a 3 Km coastal belt area from Matara Delikanda to the Nilwala river estuary, which remained highly polluted due to heaps of discarded wrappers and polythene waste.

In line with the project, about 100 civilians, belonging to several government agencies, schoolchildren and local residents, also offered their maximum contribution to the success of this project. Similarly, before the beach clearing, the beach being cleaned was divided into several sectors and after the clearing, the collected garbage was classified as degradable and non-degradable by the troops. Further, at the culmination of the event, officials of Nestlé Lanka PLC arranged to provide lunch to those who participated in this programme.

The General Officer Commanding 61 Infantry Division, Major General H M U Herath RWP RSP USP hdmc psc, Brigade Commander 613 Infantry Brigade, Brigadier K V I L Jayaweera USP and Commanding Officer of 3 (v) Battalion Gemunu Watch also engaged in this community project by giving necessary instructions.
