On 11 January 2024, a joint strike by health sector trade unions prompted the deployment of troops from the 14 Infantry Division to affected hospitals. The Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage RWP RSP ndu, initiated this response, guided by the Commander, Security Forces (West) Maj Gen SWM Fernando WWV RWP RSP VSV USP ndc psc and supervised by the General Officer Commanding 14 Infantry Division Maj Gen KAWNH Bandaranayake USP along with the respective Brigade Commanders of the 14 Infantry Division.
The troops, including those from the Regimental Centre Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, 21 Battalion of Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment, 14 Battalion of Vijayabahu Infantry Regiment, 1 Battalion of Sri Lanka National Guard, and 16 Battalion of Gajaba Regiment, swiftly assisted in maintaining essential health services at Kurunegala Teaching Hospital, Marawila Base Hospital, Kalubovila Hospital, Meerigama Hospital, and General Hospital Colombo.
