Troops of 8 Gemunu Watch under command to the 61 Infantry Division and troops of 1 Engineer service Regiment jointly constructed a new home for a needy family in Kalatuwawa Rathnapura in collaboration with the MTV/MBC, ‘Sirasa’ Media network through its ‘Sirasa Niwasa’ project on the directions given by General Shavendra Silva, Chief of Defence Staff and Commander of the Army after the project sponsors sought the Army assistance in this regard.
After the miserable plight of poverty-stricken Mrs Nisansala Gunarathne’s living condition was brought to the notice, the sponsors in order to mitigate the costs turned to the Commander of the Army in search of Army manpower and their construction skills for erection of this much-needed house.
Major General Dhammi Hewage , General Officer Commanding – 61 Infantry Division graced the auspicious inaugural house-warming as the Chief Guest, together with Mrs Needra Weerasinghe, Group Director of Capital Maharaja Company on Thursday (18) March 2021. Commander 611 Infantry Brigade, Project Officer SFHQ (West) and Commanding Officer 8 GW joined the event along with other Senior Officers.
In accordance with ancient traditions, the day's Chief Guest and the sponsors at the auspicious minute unveiled a plaque, joined oil-lamp lighting and Boiling Milk rituals, together with beneficiaries while the recipient's relatives were looking on.
