Araly Point Commemorates Lieutenant General Denzil kobbekaduwa & Accompanying War Heroes

The Araly Point Monument in Kayts on Thursday, 8 August 2024 recalled the undying memories of the country’s one of the finest legendary military leaders, Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa RWP RSP VSV USP rcds psc and several other military War Heroes who laid their lives in an LTTE landmine blast at Araly Point on 8 August 1992.

The Commander, Security Forces (Jaffna), Major General MGWWWMCB Wickramasinghe RWP RSP ndu psc graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest and several other Senior Tri Service Officers joined the 32nd death anniversary commemoration at the monument, organized by the 51 Infantry Division, under supervision of Major General WBJK Wimalaratne RWP RSP, the General Officer Commanding.

Lieutenant General Denzil Kobbekaduwa, accompanied by a team of military commanders, including Major General Vijaya Wimalaratne RWP RSP psc, Rear Admiral Mohan Jayamaha RWP RSP USP, Colonel HP Stephen psc, Colonel GH Ariyaratne RWP RSP, Colonel YN Palipana RWP RSP, Commander Asanga Lankathilaka, Lieutenant Colonel Nalin de Alwis, Lieutenant Commander CB Wijepura and Corporal Wickramarathne WJ fell victim to an LTTE landmine blast while they were on a military assignment in Araly, Jaffna.

Initially, National anthem was sung and the gathering participated in religious observances. Afterwards, Mounting of Vigil took place and a two-minute silence was observed in remembrance of fallen War Heroes. Moments later, day’s Chief Guest, Jaffna Commander placed a floral wreath and saluted in memory of all fallen veterans and it was followed by Other Senior Officers, Officers and Other Ranks laid floral wreaths at the Araly Point War Heroes monument.

Later on, Last Post, the bugle call was played in honour of the fallen War Heroes, followed by the dismounting of vigil, which concluded the day’s proceedings. Major General RKNC Jayawardena RSP ndc, General Officer Commanding of 55 Infantry Division, Senior Tri Service Officers, Officers and troops participated in representing all those War Heroes.
