55 Infantry Division Organizes a Variety of Events to Enrich the Significance of Vesak Full Moon Day

In celebration of the 2567th Vesak full moon Day, the 55 Infantry Division organized a series of events under the leadership of Major General Prasanna Gunaratne, the General Officer Commanding 55 Infantry Division. The events commenced on 4th May 2023, with a Dhamma sermon, followed by the distribution of book packs to 100 school children at Iyaakachchi GTM School on 5th May 2023, the division distributed over 1500 meal packs to the local community on the same day.

On May 4th, Venerable Hanwelle Rathanasiri Thero, the Chief incumbent of Navakkuli Temple, conducted a Dhamma preaching event to bless the troops serving under the 55 Infantry Division as part of their Vesak program. Venerable Hanwelle Rathanasiri Thero delivered an inspiring sermon emphasizing the importance of compassion, peace, and harmony in both personal and professional lives. The troops were deeply moved by his words, which uplifted their morale and renewed their dedication to serving the nation.

On May 5th, the 552 Infantry Brigade organized a book donation program at Iyyakachchi GTM School, followed by an ice cream treat for the students. The event was graced by Major General Prasanna Gunaratne and other notable guests, including Brigadier Saman Perera, the Commander of the 553 Infantry Brigade, Senior Superintendent of Police Kilinochchi Mr. MKRA Gunaratne, OIC Pallai Police Station Chief Inspector GCSK Kularathne, Mr. AP Mathan the Chairman of Tamil Hindu Union Pallai, Mr. M Kajendran the Principal of Iyyakachchi GTM School, and many parents. The event was made possible by the generous contribution of Mr. Prasad Lokubalasooriya and his team. This program aimed to promote education and inspire the students, and it achieved great success thanks to the support of all those involved.

The distribution of meal packs on 5th May 2023, was another initiative by Major General Prasanna Gunaratne. This collaborative effort involved all Brigades under the division's command and its staff. The gesture reflected the true spirit of Vesak, and it served as an opportunity for the Army to connect with the local community, fostering relationships based on trust and respect.

The villagers of Vettalakerni, Kaddaikadu, and Kevil warmly received the event, expressing their gratitude to the Army for their generosity and kindness. The distribution of meal packs, though a small gesture, had a significant impact on the lives of the recipients.

In addition to these events, an exquisite display of Vesak lanterns was showcased in front of the 55 Infantry Division at Kaddaikadu. The event was attended by Reverend Father Amal Raj, the parish priest of Kaddaikau church, as well as government officials and businessmen from the area.

Overall, these events exemplified how small acts of kindness can make a substantial difference in the lives of others. They showcased the 55 Infantry Division's unwavering commitment to serving the people of Jaffna and Kilinochchi, emphasizing their selfless service and dedication.
