Major General SWB Welagedara RSP USP ndc of the Gemunu Watch (GW) assumed office as the 33rd General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the Headquarters 51 Infantry Division in Kopay, Jaffna on 14 December 2022 during a solemn ceremony by adhering to military customs and traditions.
The newly appointed General Officer Commanding of the 51 Infantry Division was warmly welcomed by Staff Officers on his arrival and honoured in a Guard Turnout and Guard of Honour presented by 17th Battalion the Gemunu Watch troops.
Afterwards, the new General Officer Commanding was invited to the office and placed his signature for an official document to signify the acceptance of his new office, amidst 'Seth Pirith' chanting of the Maha Sanga. Subsequently, Major General Wajira Welagedara added memories by planting a Mango (Mangifera Indica) sapling in HQ premises.
Later on, the new General Officer Commanding addressed all the Officers and Other Ranks serving in the 51 Infantry Division and briefed about outline office action plan. Brigade Commanders, Staff Officers of the 51 Infantry Division, Commanding Officers, Officers and Other Ranks were attended the ceremony.
